Abstract:
Consumer markets of Muslims increasingly attract attentions worldwide. In Japan, they are expected to be prospective markets for food industry and tourism. It is considered that the Islamic law can be an obstacle for them to tap into the markets and thus getting the certification for halal is the key to enter the markets. Then, how the concept of halal and the halal certification are understood in Muslim societies? We will discuss this issue mainly focusing on Indonesia, which commands the largest Muslim population and has close relationship with Japan.
