Title: Halal System as a Hurdle to the Entry into the Islamic Food Market
Abstract:
The Islamic food market is getting attention as a post-Chinese market. There are around 1.6 billion Muslims around the world, and the size of their food market exceeds 60 trillion yen. In addition, the economy of the Islamic nations is growing at an annual rate of almost 10%, with their food market expanding by several trillion yen every year. There exists, however, a seemingly incomprehensible barrier to entry into the Islamic food market, namely the halal system based on the Islamic religion, and it has been blocking the entries of major Japanese and Western companies. The halal system involves unscientific factors and strong religiosity which are hard to understand, making it difficult for non-Islamic food companies to clear its requirements. Because of this, however, Western food companies have not yet penetrated the Islamic food market, making it a very attractive market.
