Title: The current situation and challenges related to dementia

The WHO requires every country to estimate the number of dementia patients and its related costs, and to draw up a comprehensive national strategy.  The EU has already started such approach to dementia as a priority issue.  In Japan, which is a rapidly-aging society, dementia has been an important social issue with more than 3,050,000 elders (10 % of the population of 65 and older) diagnosed with dementia.
An "International Symposium on National Dementia Strategy" was held in Japan on January 29 and 30, 2013 with participants from six countries.  We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the enactment of the Welfare Act for the Elderly this year.  I would like to have a better understanding of dementia and share what I have learned from the advanced strategies discussed at the symposium.

*The lecture was simultaneously interprited in English.
