Title:  Why is mercury becoming global environmental issues?

The mercury problems are old and new global environmental issues.
However, in Japan, it has been understood as "mercury problem = Minamata disease." The mass media has not reported about the mercury which exists in a living environment for a long time, except for the Kumamoto Daily Newspaper.
As a result, the information gap on mercury has arisen between the West and Japan. Although Japan has experienced the world's worst mercury poisoning in Minamata in 1950s, Why?
Under these circumstances, about 140 nations of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) have agreed on establishment of a mercury regulation treaty "Minamata Convention" in January 2013.
The adoption and signing ceremony is held in Kumamoto and Minamata in October.
In the lecture, I talk about the reason why a local newspaper reporter noticed it and has started writing since 2001. I am pleased if it becomes a hint which moves locally and globally.
